Trialing

My dear hubby decided he would join me for the last leg of this adventure! I entered 3 trials all over the country the last 3 weeks of May. So instead of going home, we decided to take the business on the road and travel together with the dogs.
First stop, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. We loaded the truck with crates and started our journey with the 4 adult Aussies and our two new puppies. I have been incredibly busy the past few weeks and the puppies haven't been leash trained yet. So they wore leashes for the first time at a truck stop in Oklahoma. Ranger, being his totally cool self, walked on that leash like he had been walking on it his whole life. He is VERY smart and a very old soul. Zippy acted like a normal puppy- bucking bronco style. But she was hip to the trip in quick fashion and walking the puppies became easier- well relatively...they are still puppies.
The puppies were only traveling the first leg of the trip. My friend offered to take them back to her place for doggie summer camp while we were traveling. It sure makes life easier to travel puppiless. Even though we miss those little turkeys like crazy.
Back to the trial. Duane got to see us trial for the very first time and Harley made it worth his while. It was like a magical thing had happened. She laid down one amazing run after another and took home 9 out of 9 points! Her first run was a cattle run and I was open mouthed in awe as she took those cows around that arena. It was amazing. I didn't even have to yell at her! That is epic.
She was competing against another dog for the high combined WTCH buckle all weekend. She was neck and neck with this other dog. Our last run was a duck run. The other dog ran and the judge called "warning" and I looked up and saw the handler leashing the dog and I secretly cheered, because I thought he had been excused. But it turns out there were 6 ducks in the bunch and there can only be 5. So he got a re-run. Crap. I mentioned I was competitive didn't I?
Remember I mentioned, Harley LOVES cows and goes in like a beast to manage them. She will walk between the cows and the fence (which scares a lot of dogs)- actually she loves to do that... anyway... Turns out, Harley is a really good duck dog. Her highest scores are in ducks.
So I was pretty confident going into that last duck run. That's when disaster strikes, isn't it? Well, it was like deja-vu. Four ducks came out nice and pretty and the 5th duck stayed in the pen. My heart sank. This duck wasn't coo coo, he just didn't want to be with the other four, because they were picking on him. So Harley moved the 4 ducks through obstacle one. Then she moved the single duck through obstacle one. Then the four through obstacle two and then we were moving the one towards obstacle two and the judge told us to stop. She was giving us a re-run. Whew. One more chance.
Even though I was really proud of the work she was doing, I was relieved to get another chance to win that buckle. So both of the top dogs running for the buckle got re-runs on the final run of the weekend. Since this is all for fun, no matter what... we were heckling each other and joking about duck runs while we waited for the rest of the advanced runs to go. The other dog had an ok run, but Harley had an epically beautiful run. It was almost perfect. She moved those ducks around the arena and put them directly through the center chute. It was beautiful. And she closed the weekend with her highest score ever a 115!
At the awards ceremony, she only won 1 first place for the epic duck run. Many of the dogs really struggled with those ducks that day. Harley is a duck dog.
I was not expecting to with the High Combined WTCH buckle so when they called Harley's number I was ecstatic. It wasn't about winning the buckle. I was so excited that I finally have a dog that can compete with other really good dogs that are well trained. It is really fun. This is her 3rd buckle and the one I am most proud of.
I still have some hope that a shot at finals is still possible. But the game is not over yet. We still need more points and there are 2 more trials to go! I will keep you posted!
