Is Your Dog Eligible?
Only herding breeds are eligible to participate for lessons. Non-herding breeds cannot participate in herding events. Mixed breed dogs are allowed but they must resemble and act like a herding breed.
Human and dog aggressive dogs are not permitted to attend lessons. If you have a concern about this, please contact me. We can set up private lessons to work on aggression issues separately. Dogs that are hard on livestock may be required to wear a muzzle.
This sport requires obedience and strict adherence to ethical treatment of livestock. We are kind to our dogs and livestock. The primary purpose of a herding dog is to care for livestock.
Dogs must be over 6 months of age, be vaccinated and healthy. We don't impose an upper age limit as some dogs surprise us, but if your dog is geriatric, this is generally not the right sport. Dogs exhibiting any injury or lameness or appear in any way not physically up to the challenge will need a veterinarian's certificate of health to participate.
We will be learning:
We will give your dog a chance to see if he/she is interested in doing herding work. Not all herding dogs are actually bred to herd anymore. So plan to be ok with whatever your dog tells you.
Each session is customized to the individual dog and handler with specific goals in mind. Herding is a very intense sport, so we will work our sessions for the best interest of the dog and the stock.
Wear comfortable FLAT shoes and clothes that you don't mind getting dirty.
Herding has the possibility of being dangerous. Our stock are gentle but accidents do happen. Be sure to inform your instructor if you have any mobility issues or are nervous around sheep.
🚨 WARNING: UNDER TEXAS LAW (CHAPTER 87, CIVIL PRACTICE & REMEDIES CODE) A FARM ANIMAL PROFESSIONAL IS NOT LIABLE FOR AN INJURY TO OR THE DEATH OF A PARTICIPANT IN THE FARM ANIMAL ACTIVITIES RESULTING FROM THE INHERENT RISKS OF FARM ANIMAL ACTIVITIES.
YOU MUST schedule lessons in advance.
Lessons take place in a group format. Each dog will get 2 working sessions.
The cost of regular lessons is $50. Evaluations and initial evaluations are $75. Lessons and evaluations are to be paid upon arrival to the facility. Cash, check, Zelle or paypal are the only accepted forms of payment. Your lesson will not commence until payment has been made.
If you can't make it, please cancel your lesson within 48 hours so that anyone on the waiting list can get on the schedule.
Note: If you "No-Show", you may be blocked from future sign-ups.
